The Physics of Overload

If you overload a circuit, it blows.
If you overload a boat, it will sink.
If you overload a truck, it won’t roll.
If you overload a plane, it won’t fly.
If you overload a train, it won’t stop.
If you overload a bridge it will collapse.
If you overload a flash drive, you get an error.

These simple laws of physics are easy enough for children to understand.
What’s not so easy to understand is why — as grown adults — we think our bodies and minds are any different.
Your personal overload is increasing your risk of getting sick, whether you feel the weight or not.

Last month we spoke about the third stage of dis-ease – irritation. This month, we’re going to talk about stage 4 – Inflammation. In this stage, the body works the hardest to restore itself. This is the stage where pathology can often be found by physicians. It does involve pain. Pain does have a purpose. It is the body’s most effective warning signal. It’s very effective in getting your attention! In other words, it’s telling you that if you don’t do something now, you’re seriously going to endanger yourself.

Chronic pain indicates that your body is getting desperate. The problem is that we haven’t been taught to recognize pain in this manner. Instead we go to the doctor, have some tests done and often they will find some kind of pathology (dis-ease). At this point a drug may be prescribed. The drug can suppress the symptoms but will not remove the true cause of the problem! In addition,the drug will add to the person’s toxic load. If the drugs do not work, surgery can be the next step. Again, this does not address the ’cause’.
At this stage if serious actions are not taken to improve health, the body will fall into a deeper dis-eased state…stage 5.

Here are some examples of inflammation:

sinusitis, colitis, tinnitis, arthritis, tonsilitis, dermatitis, gastritis, rhinitis (anything ending with ‘itis’ shows that the organ is overburdened)
allergies, sensitivities, hypersensitivities, intolerances
infections, colds, fever

Here are 5 important things you must do to help address inflammation in your body:

1. With the help of a qualified professional, cleanse your body of toxins – this is not a one time deal!

2. If you don’t maintain your home, dust and dirt will start to accumulate and things willbreak down.

3. Consume omega 3 essential fatty acids. They are great anti-inflammatories but must be taken in a ratio of 1:1 with omega 6′s – fish oils are about a 1:10 and plant based forms are not absorbed well! Remember your body can’t make them, so you need to consume them!

4. Eat non-dairy, wheat-free products with a large focus (80%) on vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds – if possible, NO bar codes! Most of your immune system is in your gut – around 70% or more, so you need some good probiotics (acidophillus) and sorry folks, but your bowel movements need to be at 2-3 daily.

5. Take time for yourself to de-stress and relax!

1. The glycemic index of whole wheat flour/bread is the same as white flour/bread, so your best bet is to avoid bread all together and eat the actual grain itself!

2. If you’re allergic to ragweed, you may also be sensitive to bananas, melons, cucumber, zucchini, cammomille, sunflower seeds or honey.

3. If you’re suffering from allergies now, Cockle, Mugwort, Dock, Amaranth, Pigweed, Lamb’s Quarters, Plantain and Russian Thistle may also be an issue…not to mention mold

Let’s talk Pregnancy!

I know a couple of people who are thinking about or are already pregnant, so I thought I’d focus this month’s newsletter on pregnancy. Here’s a few things you need to know:

Hazards of additives such as MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, aspartame and nutrisweet (also known as excitotoxins) in foods. These ingredients have been proven in scientific studies to destroy neurons in the brain. Young and unborn children are especially affected. These items literally excite particular brain cells to death. Neurons do not regenerate. In adults symptoms may manifest as Parkinson’s or Multiple Sclerosis. I encourage you to read the book called Excitotoxins to learn a lot more.

Supplements you should be taking. First you need a prenatal supplement. Children are very self serving. If you do not have an excess supply of a particular nutrient immediately available within your body, your child will steal what you have. A great example is Calcium – your unborn child will take any calcium stores from the mother which may cause the mother to become depleted. It may take years for some women to recover. Stay clear from the supplements generally found in drug stores. When it comes to supplements, you do get what you pay for.

EFA’s Remember EFA’s (aka essential fatty acids)? Well, these are essential for rapid brain and nervous system development. One of the components, DHA, helps eye and nerve cell structures. Again, when pregnancy begins, the body will release any available DHA to the fetus and the mother may become depleted! You can have one or two servings of cold water fish per week, but no more than that. To play it safe take a pharmaceutical grade fish oil supplement which is guaranteed to be free of toxins, metals, etc. Aim for at least 2-3 tsp a day or look for a dosage containing a minimum of 300mg.

Other supplements
Another important one is acidophilus, a probiotic. Again, the good ones are always refrigerated and contain at least 5 billion per capsule! Probiotics help support the immune and digestive systems. As an added bonus, probiotics may help with eczema and food allergies.

Make sure your prenatal supplement contains sufficient folic acid; about 800mg daily. This is necessary to help prevent poor brain and spinal cord development (eg. Spina bifida).

When you consider the fact that we need 10 servings of fruit and vegetables daily (1 serving is 1 cup raw or ½ cup cooked), taking a good quality greens supplement is highly recommended as well.

For nausea take red raspberry, ginger, B6 or Magnesium.

If you want an easy delivery these items will help:

 red raspberry – balances the last 3 months of pregnancy, is a uterine antispasmodic, tones and strengthens the uterus
 chestnut – harmonizes hormone functions
 rosemary – detoxifies from the pill, prevents premature delivery, balances metabolism of hormones

There are other combinations of herbs as well which help with water retention, fatigue, etc.

We all try to eat well. We think we obtain all the nutrients we need from the foods we eat, but read these points below. You may find that, perhaps, we’re not. For instance, iodine, an essential mineral for regulating the thyroid gland, can only be found NOW in sea vegetables. Maybe that’s why many of us have thyroid problems. Here’s a few more points for you to ponder:


• If our nation’s soil was virgin – which it is not!
• If our ancestors had been perfect – they were not!
• If you could teach people to eat to satisfy the body’s needs and not their appetites – which you cannot!
• If we could all own our cow or goat, raise our own meat, and poultry – which we cannot!
• If foods were not harvested green and immature – but they are!
• If storage did not produce deficiencies in vitamins – but it does!
• If we lived in a stress-free world – but we do not!
• If chemical fertilizers were not used in our soil – but they are!
• If the animals were not force-fed hormones and antibiotics to increase their weight and man an earlier market day – which they are!
• If the animals we eat were fed a perfect diet – which they are not!
• If insecticides did not penetrate every cell of our food – but they do!
• If most of our grains were not refined into dried cereals – but they do!
• If our white sugar possessed anything more nutritive than sand – which it does not!
• If our modern white flour was all used for wallpaper paste instead of bakery goods – which it is not!
• If our foods were not overcooked – but they are!
• If our deep fry fats were not to be found in almost every restaurant – but they are!
• If man would live by the laws of nature – which he will not!
• If our environment (water, air, food, etc.) was not severely polluted – which it is!


• Except for your brain cells, 50,000,000 of the cells in your body will have died and been replaced with others, all while you have been reading this sentence.
• The adult heart beats about 40,000,000 times a year. In one hour, the heart works hard enough to produce enough energy to raise almost one ton of weight one yard from the ground.
• The liver is often called the body’s chemical factory. Scientists have counted 500 different liver functions.
• The central nervous system is connected to every part of the body by 43 pairs of nerves. 12 parts go on to and from the brain, and 31 go from the spinal cord. There are nearly 45 miles of nerves running through our bodies.
• Messages travel along the nerves as electrical impulses. The fastest they travel is about 248 miles per hour.
• In one square inch of skin there are four yards of nerve fibers, 1300 nerve cells, 100 sweat glands, 9 million cells and 3 yards of blood vessels.

The point behind all these facts is that your body is a wonderful complete creation. Like a machine, all of its parts, (organs, glands, muscles, and tissues), must be in good working condition. Its’ electrical system (nervous system), must be carrying energy smoothly to all areas. There must not be any short circuits. Finally, it must be fuelled with the proper nutrition to keep it functioning, alive and well.

So, Where do I get my calcium? That’s a question that many clients ask me when considering the possibility of eliminating dairy from their diets.

The simplest way to answer that is with another question. Where do cows get all their calcium from? Do they drink milk? No, they eat lots of grass and greens! Unfortunately over the years, we’ve forgotten that calcium comes from other sources than cows’ milk. Some excellent sources include beets, broccoli, collards, kale, kidney beans, parsley, sesame seeds, almonds, brazil nuts, salmon or sardines with bones and especially sea vegetables.

There’s also a few other things to consider. When mammals are weaned, their body stops producing the enzymes required to digest milk – one of these enzymes is called Lactase. Lactase is used to break down Lactose, the carbohydrate in milk. About 90% of Japanese, Chinese, Mediterraneans, African Americans and Jews have this issue. In North America, 25% of Caucasians are lactose intolerant (Colbin, 1986).

It’s also not enough to consume foods high in calcium; the body has to be able to utilize it properly as well. There are several types of foods in our diet besides cows’ milk that affect calcium balance.

Sugar – Refined white and brown sugars have little or no mineral content and create acidity in the body. To neutralize this acidity, the body must use its own alkalizing (buffering) minerals to metabolize them. If necessary, the body will take these from storage areas such as our bones and teeth. Calcium and Magnesium are examples of buffering minerals.

High protein foods, coffee, pop, alcohol, table salt, wine, vinegar, citrus, refined products (including white flour, packaged goods), and tobacco (a nightshade) also affect calcium balance in the same way. In summary any acid forming food consumed in excess has the potential to deplete these buffering minerals.

What about Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis should be related to calcium loss rather than lack of intake. Eat lots of greens, drink plenty of clean water (not the spring kind), do some weight bearing exercises, and don’t overdo it with acid forming foods! Take a good quality supplement prior to menopause containing Calcium, Vitamin D, Magnesium and Phosphorous. Remember, when it comes
to calcium levels, it’s much easier to prevent bone loss than correct it.

· The recommended daily allowance for calcium is now up to 1200mg per day.

· Why do we have one of the highest rates of osteoporosis even though our dairy intake in North America is high?

· Goats’ milk and cheeses are much more easily digested by us than cows’ milk.

· Synthetic Vitamin D added to milk may cause calcium to be deposited in the joints.

· The ideal ratio of calcium to phosphorous is about 2:1. Any more phosphorous can actually prevent calcium absorption — cows’ milk is about 1:1; human milk about 2.5:1

· Sesame seeds have 1160mg of calcium per 100 grams versus 118 for cow’s milk.

· Calcium requires high stomach acid levels in order to be metabolized.

· Calcium from plant sources is generally better absorbed.

The body is made of 60-70% water.  In fact every cell in our body is made of water.  We can survive for weeks without food, but only 3-5 days without water.  Water is also required for every bodily process; such as digestion, absorption, circulation and elimination.  It is also the primary transporter of nutrients throughout the body.  Water is also used to protect joints, organs and tissues.  The body also uses water to help regulate body temperature (such as when sweating) — therefore, it is important!!

How much water do we need?
Water requirements depend on our size, activity level, health, diet and climate.  We also must take into account the water we lose daily due through our skin (25%), lungs (19%), urine (50%) and bowels (6%).  Coffee, tea, cocoa, pop and alcohol do NOT count as water and act as diuretics.  In other words, they increase water loss; as well as vitamin and mineral loss.

Benefits of water
Bowel, bladder and headache problems can be improved substantially just by increasing water consumption.  It also helps to flush toxins out of the body.  Some other problems that can be improved include anxiety attacks, arthritis, high stomach acid, muscle pains and chronic fatigue.  In fact, not drinking enough water may contribute to kidney problems since they are responsible for removing various acids that build up in the body.

What types of water are best?
For now, in my opinion, the best option for water is reverse osmosis.  This method removes everything, although it does waste water.  Distilled is another option; however, there is concern that the high temperature used to make it, causes different biochemical effects on the body.  With reverse osmosis & distilled, it’s best to include extra liquid trace minerals in your diet as they can leach minerals from your body.  Please avoid tap water as it can/may contain chlorine, heavy metals, pesticides, industrial chemicals, parasites, phosphates, & fertilizers that leak into the water supply – many of these have been linked to cancer.  Also be careful with spring water.  If it’s bottled at the source, it’s often not treated and may be contaminated.  Others may be similar to tap water.  Simple granulated carbon filters also do not do much and germs can accumulate if their filters are not cleaned/changed frequently.  Brita is an example.  Solid block carbon filters are better than granulated carbon because they retain natural trace minerals; however they still can contain bacteria and some heavy metals.  Well water may contain heavy metals and agricultural/industrial pollutants.  If you use your own well or spring water, have them tested often.


• One pint of water is lost daily just from breathing alone.  This is because the lungs need to re-moisturize themselves.
• The body needs 1 cup of water just to process an equal amount of coffee, pop or tea.  Again, these are NOT water sources.
• To determine your daily needs take your weight divide by 2 and divide by 8 to give how many cups you need per day (more is required if you exercise).
• Water can slow aging.
• Downs, mottled teeth and cancer is linked to fluoridated water.
• Water is very beneficial for constipation.

We know the facts. We have been studying stress and its effect on physical health since the late 1880’s. So why do we still have such a problem in our work and personal lives.

People do not go for help in a timely fashion-which is normal. We all think we need to figure stuff out on our own without going to therapy.

Stress is part of our lives and at times, it can be good. Our bodies create the stress response when we have happy unexpected surprises. The problem is chronic stress. When we are exposed to constant stress our bodies have a hard time in balancing the increase in cortisol, sugar, amino acids etc. that are racing through our blood stream. As a therapist, I have seen clients who are not even aware that their level of stress is damaging to their bodies and their emotional health. It has been proven that chronic stress can lead to depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, and physical illness. I often see people who have tolerated high levels of stress until they can no longer function at home or at work.

According to Canada Safety Council report dated April 2008; mental health claims are the fastest growing category of disability costs in Canada. They account for an estimated 30 to 40 percent of the disability claims recorded by Canada’s major insurers and employers. Three-quarters of employers say mental health issues are the leading cause of short and long term disability claims in their organization.

  • Lost work time due to depression costs companies $31 billion to 441 billion per year in lost productivity
  • 79% of employers think they take care of their employees, yet only 44% of employees agree
  • Health care expenditures are nearly 50% greater for workers who report high levels of stress

Here’s some more information about stress:

We are familiar with external stress, but stress can also internal.  Internal stress comes from our attempts to deal with toxins, illness, drugs, allergies, poor diet, balancing blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, pH, breathing, et cetera. 

The body can handle and adapt to short term stress; however, prolonged stress has a profound effect on the body.  Think of a zebra on the African plains.  When a lion comes, it goes into ‘fight/flight’ and releases its energy by running away.  Our body’s internal mechanisms work the same way, but we don’t physically need to run away from the lion anymore (as much as we’d like to), so we never release our stress, it just keeps building!  Stress is CUMULATIVE!

Here’s one last explanation.  Under stress, our stress glands (the adrenals) try to adapt to increased demand by increasing its release of stress hormones (cortisol).  When it can’t keep up, the organ enlarges to try to meet the stress requirements.  Eventually the adrenals become exhausted and no longer function properly.  This is called adrenal fatigue.  Some symptoms of adrenal fatigue may include:  allergies, insomnia, fatigue, eyes sensitive to light, dizziness upon standing, low blood pressure, cold hands and feet, low sex drive, cravings for salt or energy drops in the late afternoon (requiring ‘caffeine or other pick-me-ups’).

There is some good news; however.  We can help our bodies to recover with the aid of glandular and herbal supplements.  But the ultimate key to success is learning how to handle stress properly.  Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing are good places to start.
